A hum of tyres heralds the distant approach of the peleton yet unseen. Then suddenly, with flashes of light and splashes of colour, the peleton speeds by at 50km per hour. Many riders are sitting up chatting, some are watching, some are waiting, some are even free-wheeling occasionally. Only a few are concertedly giving close to their maximum effort at the front, but not for too long.
